I main merc and personally, I've never had trouble fighting the worms. Just keep moving, sprinting, and jumping around while keeping a close distance. And when they pop up, spam dash and r until they're dead. The annoying this is that fighting the worms can take really long because they like to go away from you most of the timeNothing specific other than the current difficulty level and time. There's a level director that "chooses" what to spawn. Essentially points are built up then spent spawning enemies. The harder the difficulty or the later in the run the more points are generated.
